100% Optical 2024 – Myopia Management is Going Mainstream

Another 100% Optical is in the bag, and what a whirlwind of conversations, innovations, and eye-opening moments it was. I was there flying the flag for Occuity, showcasing the PM1 Pachymeter and the AX1 Axiometer—our handheld, non-contact axial length measurement device.

Axial length is beocming a key measurment in myopia management. Here a prototype of the handheld, non-contact Occuity AX1 Axioeter is being demonstrated.

But beyond that, it was a chance to reflect on my own journey into understanding what myopia really is and why it isn't just "needing to wear glasses" - and a journey that ultimately led to me wanting more people to know about it, and with Jason Higginbotham's clinical guidance - and thus Myopia Focus was born.

Myopia Focus – From Niche to Necessary

Myopia Focus is now about 4 years old, and the shift in how optometrists approach myopia management in that time has been huge. This year, once again, I could feel the momentum continuing to build. More and more clinicians appear to be asking themselves how they can offer myopia management as an essential part of their practice. Professional bodies around the world are also adopting the World Optometry Council mantra about duty of care and the ‘three M’s’ – mitigation, measurement and management

I founded Myopia Focus with Jason, and while it has obvious ties to my work with Occuity, it’s also deeply personal. In many ways, as a highly myopic parent, I feel like a walking billboard for both the problem and the solution when it comes to myopia. And spending time at 100% Optical only reinforced that feeling.

Why My Story Matters

Over three days, I had countless conversations that played out in exactly the same way. People would see my ridiculously thick lenses and immediately started calculating my level of myopia quietly in their heads. I’d mention that my axial length is 28mm, and they would give me a sympathetic grimace. I’d follow up with the fact that two of my kids are on Ortho-K, and suddenly, the mood would lift - "Well that's good!"

I’ve realised that sharing my personal journey is important and valuable. I’m not one to seek the spotlight, but when it comes to myopia, I feel like I have to speak up. Because if a high myope like me can make other parents become aware to the risks of uncontrolled myopia, then it’s worth it. If my story gets through to just a few more families who take early action, that’s a win.

The Industry is Waking Up

The best part? The industry is changing focus with regards to Myopia, and I am enjoying playing a small roll in encouraging that. The optical world is full of passionate open-minded and knowledgeable professionals who genuinely care and want better outcomes for their patients. I must have said “I’m not an optometrist, but...” a thousand times over the weekend, before then expressing my view on the subject - yet no one dismissed my parental perspective. Instead, (I believe) they appeared to value it. Because at the end of the day, this is a conversation that needs to happen not just among clinicians, but with parents too.

New Innovations & Progress

Beyond the great discussions, 100% Optical was full of exciting new technologies. From new Ortho-K designs that lighten the workload for clinicians (which could lead to wider adoption), to R&D on handheld topographers, to better communication platforms that bridge the gap between ECPs and patients—the tools for tackling myopia head-on are getting better all the time.

And of course, getting to personally demonstrate the AX1 Axiometer was a highlight. It was clear that axial length measurement is something ECPs want, and we’re here to deliver it.

Looking Ahead

The bad news? The number of myopes is still skyrocketing, modern lifestyles aren’t helping and personally, I don't see that changing any time soon.

The good news? Myopia management is gaining traction, and with the right awareness, tools, and treatments, we can help millions of kids avoid a future filled with concerns about their eye health.

I left 100% Optical feeling more energised than ever, and I can’t wait to share more insights, new products, and expert perspectives in upcoming Myopia Focus content.
