Brian Tompkins - Pushing Back Against Myopia

Hello, I'm Brian Tompkins, an experienced independent practitioner based in Northampton, UK, working out of my beautifully refurbished Victorian house-practice. With a career spanning a fair few years, I have had the privilege of serving as Past President of the British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) and being named the AOP Contact Lens Practitioner of the Year. My passion for optometry has led me to lecture internationally on business, imaging technology, myopia management, and specialist contact lens topics, always aiming to educate and entertain—hence my title as optometry’s best-known "EDUTAINER."

To celebrate this year's #MyopiaAwarenessWeek, I wanted to create a resource to help spread the myopia awareness message. So I created this short video:

What’s the Big Deal About Myopia?

Myopia, or short-sightedness, isn’t just about needing glasses. If it progresses unchecked, it can lead to serious eye issues like glaucoma and retinal detachment later in life. But don’t worry, there’s plenty we can do to manage it effectively.

Early Detection is Key

Catching myopia early makes a huge difference. Regular eye check-ups are a must, especially for kids. Simple changes, like encouraging outdoor play and reducing screen time, can help slow down the progression of myopia.

Raising Awareness

During Myopia Awareness Week, let’s spread the word about the importance of eye health. Educating ourselves and others about myopia can help us take proactive steps to protect our kids’ vision.

Continuous Learning and Collaboration

Managing myopia is a collaborative effort. Staying updated with the latest research and working with other eye care professionals ensures we provide the best care possible.

Let’s work together to keep those young eyes bright and healthy!

Warm regards,

Brian Tompkins Advisory Board Member, MyopiaFocus.org
